Unmarketing 101 - 8/31/10

Image
Unmarketing 101 - 8/31/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 242 of Project 365. Good days are always made better when you get a welcomed package delivered. Such was the case today, when I opened up the package containing my very own copy of Scott Stratten's book "UnMarketing".

I had pre-ordered it a few months ago and I didn't realize it had shipped. Sometimes those are the best surprises. Next up, I need to meet Scott and see if he'll autograph it for me.

I can't wait to read it and soon!

Near West Side - 8/30/10

Image
Near West Side - 8/30/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 241 of Project 365. I went for an extended walk today and upon turning around to go back to the office, I snapped this picture of the Sears (WatchutalkinaboutWillis) Tower. There's nothing really special about the picture but I like it.

Sunday clouds - 8/29/10

Image
Sunday clouds - 8/29/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 240 of Project 365. Over the weekend I worked on a PC for a friend's mother. After Megan went home on Sunday, I drove out to Oak Lawn to deliver the PC. On the way there, I noticed the clouds...so I pulled over for a photo.

I'm glad I did!

Are you texting me? - 8/28/10

Image
Are you texting me? - 8/28/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 239 of Project 365. Anyone who really knows me, knows that on my weekends with my daughter, Saturday night is pizza night. Nine times out of ten that means Beggars Pizza. This past Saturday night was no exception.

We normally talk and text each other as a joke when at the table. We kid around a lot and that makes for a good relationship.

As you can see, Megan was concentrating on a text message and therefore didn't notice my ninja picture taking skills. All in all, it was a good weekend :)

Shower Treats - 8/27/10

Image
Shower Treats - 8/27/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 238 of Project 365. Here's a shot from the treat table at Elise's work wedding shower. There is a light directly over the table which is why the Doritos are left out in the dark. The cupcakes were from Jewel, while the rice crispy treats and brownies were homemade.

Can you say "tasty"?

Shine down on me - 8/26/10

Image
Shine down on me - 8/26/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 237 of Project 365. The work situation has almost worked itself out. Because of that, it really doesn't matter when I get to work these days. This morning, as I stood there waiting for my train, I looked up to the sky and I realized my future mirrored the clouds that loomed above me - I see the sun, I know it's there, but it's partially hidden.

Just like my future.

Just like all of our futures.

Just like all of our tomorrows.

Wedding Shower - 8/25/10

Image
Wedding Shower - 8/25/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 236 of Project 365. My co-worker Elise is getting married soon. September 18th to be exact. We had a wedding shower for her at work.

There was a nice turnout and plenty of delicious treats for everyone. Elise is excited about her wedding and that is really awesome to see.

I wish them nothing but the best of luck, love & happiness.

Oh, by the way, does anyone want to go to a wedding? I need a date...

Like a Super Nova - 8/24/10

Image
Like a Super Nova - 8/24/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 235 of Project 365. Here's a shot from my seat at the Rush concert on Monday. The Sun was reflecting off of the building in the distance at just the right angle to create this effect. I thought it looked cool and I'm happy to see that the picture shows what I saw. Due to the way the blog shows pictures, click on the picture to see it in it's entirety.

Lindsey the Loop Rock Girl - 8/23/10

Image
Lindsey the Loop Rock Girl - 8/23/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 234 of Project 365. Monday night was the re-scheduled Rush concert. I got there with plenty of time to spare and as I found my way to my seat, I passed the Loop tent. I didn't realize that Lindsey, the Loop Rock Girl, would be there...so I was surprised to see her. I was also surprised by the shortness of the line.

Guy Code states that "Photo ops with hot women are never to be passed up unless you are accompanied by a wife or girlfriend". I couldn't risk losing my man-card over it, so I posed for the picture. It's tough work, but someone's got to do it.

Honey, I'm home! - 8/22/10

Image
Honey, I'm home! - 8/22/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 233 of Project 365. I see this building a lot and I look at it and I wonder what it would be like to live there. Of course with my luck, it's probably an office building :p

It's got a great view of the lake and of the city. It's such a modern looking building and it's the type of place that I would never be able to afford.

It's nice to dream, I suppose.

Good Morning - 8/21/10

Image
Good Morning - 8/21/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 232 of Project 365. I woke up, went out side and snapped this picture. I wish all the pictures were this easy to get.

Friday - 8/20/10

Image
Friday - 8/20/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 231 of Project 365. I walked out of my apartment this morning, looked up in the sky and I immediately thought of my friend Sarah in Michigan. Sarah is a follow cloud lover :)

Happy Friday, Sarah! :)

Lunchtime Funtime - 8/19/10

Image
Lunchtime Funtime - 8/19/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 230 of Project 365. As you can see, the Crown Fountain is very popular with parents & their kids in the heat of the summer. This photo doesn't do it justice - the amount of water cascading down the sides is actually quite substantial.

Nothing like a free, easy way to keep cool in the city.

Lunch with a friend - 8/18/10

Image
Lunch with a friend - 8/18/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 229 of Project 365. It was such a beautiful day that I didn't need much help in convincing my totally awesome co-worker, Karen, that taking our lunch to Millennium Park was a good idea.

This picture was taken with the 1.3 megapixel front camera instead of the 8 megapixel main camera that I usually use. That's one of the many cool things about the EVO 4G - dual cameras. Lucky for me, and some might argue unlucky for you, it makes taking self pictures extremely easy.

I'm happy I was able to guilt, I mean convince, Karen into taking this picture. The winds of change are blowing and you have to do things while you can.

Word.

The Gov. is a Felon. Film at 11... - 8/17/10

Image
The Gov. is a Felon. Film at 11... - 8/17/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 228 of Project 365. The Rod Blagojevich trial is over and it seems like the whole country really was watching. I passed this CNN truck on the way to the train.

Of course this is just round one and with appeals, this circus is just getting warmed up.

Leaves - 8/16/10

Image
Leaves - 8/16/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 227 of Project 365. I took my lunch to Millennium Park with my co-worker Elise. It was a fine day...perhaps too fine. I say that because there was not a cloud in the sky...and as you know clouds are one of my favorite subjects.

Elise looked up from our park bench and said something along the lines of "Take a picture of the leaves". I looked up and thought..."Well...yeah, it does look pretty cool.". So there you have it. Sunlight filtered through the leaves.

Bad Day - 8/15/10

Image
Bad day - 8/15/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 226 of Project 365. Have you ever had a life changing moment that you really had no business surviving? I did back on August 14, 1998. I was the driver of the Humvee that was hit by the white Semi in the background.

My truck was cut off by a small passenger car and when I slammed on the brakes, my trucks brakes partially locked up sending the Humvee into the next lane. The Semi was passing us as it happened and there really was nothing anybody could have done to avoid the accident.

The truck hit directly behind were I was sitting and I took the entire brunt of the accident. Thankfully, the other two Marines in the truck walked away shaken, but otherwise alright.

Those with sharp eyes will probably notice the helicopter in the background. That was my ride to the hospital. I might have been one of the most hated men in California that day since I had I-5 blocked for about 13 miles in each direction. This picture is from the paper an…

We're on a boat!! - 8/14/10

Image
We're on a boat!!, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 225 of Project 365. If you've been following me at all on Twitter or Facebook, you've undoubtedly heard about "FIJI Hunt". Well I'm here to tell you that it was a smashing success! It was a very fun (and HOT) day and it really tested one's ability to plan, think & execute. The teams found out what the objectives were 15 minutes prior to the start time and we had to rely on clues to find the objectives. The teams were tasked with taking photos and checking in via Twitter, Facebook and FourSquare.

My partner, Teresa Peek, was a stranger over a month ago. We ended up meeting at the Foiled Cupcakes Birthday Party and we've been friends ever since.

I was thinking about doing this but I was supposed to have Megan this weekend. A couple of weeks prior I found out Megan was going to Florida with her Mom & Stepfather, so that left me available to do it. When I saw Teresa needed a partner, I threw …

Busy Clouds - 8/13/10

Image
Busy Clouds - 8/13/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 224 of Project 365. It was a pretty busy Friday which was surprising given the way work has been lately. I managed to sneak out in the early afternoon and I was greeted by these clouds.

Keep your eye on the... - 8/12/10

Image
Keep your eye on the... - 8/12/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 223 of Project 365. A gaggle of co-workers made the 47 block trek to Epic Burger for lunch today. Pretty much everyone at the company had an order and we needed the manpower to pick it up. Even I ordered something, though it was merely a low fat smoothie ;)

I had been wondering were the creepy super gigantic eyeball had been residing...

Now I know.

After run snack - 8/11/10

Image
After run snack - 8/11/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 222 of Project 365. I try to stay extremely active and running 4 - 5 days a week is a big part of that. I try to eat as much fruit and as many vegetables as possible, so often times I'll have a mango after my run.

Sweet, sweet, delicious mango :)

Transformers Set? - 8/10/10

Image
Transformers Set? - 8/10/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 221 of Project 365. I was walking back to the office after another awesome visit at West Loop Chiro, when I noticed the wreckage across the street. Call me crazy, but I'm thinking it's a holding area for set pieces from the Transformers 3 filming.

Or not.

Chicago by rooftop - 8/09/10

Image
Chicago by rooftop - 8/09/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 220 of Project 365. This is another shot from Teresa's rooftop party. I think I'm going to try upping the brightness settings on the camera. We'll see how that turns out. Teresa told me she likes to sit out there at night and I can see why. The night time view is really amazing. Unfortunately, those pictures didn't turn out well enough for me to use them.

Rooftop Clouds - 8/08/10

Image
Rooftop Clouds - 8/08/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 219 of Project 365. My new friend Teresa invited me over for a rooftop party at her place Sunday night. Her rooftop area has a fabulous view of the city! Soon after we went up to the roof, the clouds started rolling in. This is one of my favorite shots from that night. I love the fact that there is a lot going on in this picture. Nature is beautiful like that.

I was facing West for this shot.

Elise - 8/07/10

Image
Elise - 8/07/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 218 of Project 365. This was actually taken on day 217, but I wanted to share it anyway. I noticed that the Crown Fountain in the background was smiling at the same time as Elise which was completely unintentional. Normally the Crown Fountain alternates different faces and it was just dumb luck on my part that I snapped the picture when I did. Due to the way the blog handles photographs, you'll have to click the photo to see it in it's entirety.

Michigan & Madison - 8/06/10

Image
Michigan & Madison - 8/06/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 217 of Project 365. I had lunch at Millennium Park today with my co-worker Elise. We sat on a park bench, making snarky comments about the various people passing by, and I keep looking at this building. I love the top of it. I think and dream about owning the top floors of a building like this and I wonder if the very top is decorative? Is it usable space? Horror beyond horror if it is usable space and it's being utilized as storage! From the outside, a space like that appears to be worthy of a great room full of leather couches. A place where one could go with an early morning coffee to enjoy a glorious sunrise. A place of solitude.

I've always been intrigued by architecture and the decisions that go into its designs.

Wall of Fame - 8/05/10

Image
Wall of Fame - 8/05/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 216 of Project 365. As far back as I can remember, the company I work for has always had name tags for everyone's cubicles. A former co-worker started keeping the name tags of people that left the company. After this person had collected about 3 or 4 name tags, they left the company as well.

On his or her last day this employee asked out loud "Ok, who wants the name tags?" Nobody really said anything, so I spoke up and took them. I've had them ever since. Mostly they are the names of people that have left on their own. Especially during the first 3 years that I started keeping them. Lately they are the names of people that have been laid off due to our company being bought by another company or people leaving on their own accord, but still due to the acquisition.

The acting CEO has asked me about the wall and I know he's not a fan of it. Well, that's too bad. Those names on the wall might just be nam…

Church - 8/04/10

Image
Church - 8/04/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 215 of Project 365. I park at a church in the morning and then walk a block to the train station. Occasionally I'll see something that might be photo worthy and normally as my bad luck would have it, it's in the morning when I don't have time to stop for a picture. I was on my way back to my car and I noticed the cloud cover. I turned and shot this picture and I really liked how it turned out.

I'm a gamer and I'm a big fan of the Left4Dead series. For some reason this picture reminds me of the quiet before the zombie hordes arrive....

Maybe I should start keeping a shotgun in my trunk? You never know.

Rainbow - 8/03/10

Image
Rainbow - 8/23/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 214 of Project 365. Coming home on the train, a rainbow appeared out of nowhere. I was hoping for rogue Unicorns too, but no. No such luck.

Maybe next time.

Crown Fountain - 8/02/10

Image
Millennium Park Foutains - 8/02/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 213 of Project 365. Michigan Avenue in Chicago has some very cool stuff to see. There's the various hotels, the Wrigley Building, Water Tower Place, The Art Institute, Millennium Park and of course the Crown Fountain. The Crown Fountain is especially cool and is a true site to behold at night.

From the Millennium Park Wikipedia article:

"Crown Fountain is a first of its kind interactive work of public art and video sculpture, named in honor of Chicago's Crown family and designed by Catalan conceptual artist Jaume Plensa, it opened in July 2004. The fountain is composed of a black granite reflecting pool placed between a pair of transparent glass brick towers. The towers are 50 feet (15.2 m) tall, and they use light-emitting diodes behind the bricks to display digital videos on their inward faces. Construction and design of the Crown Fountain cost $17 million. Weather permitting, the water operates from…

AMC AMX - 8/01/10

Image
AMC AMX - 8/01/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 212 of Project 365. Let me apologize now for the fact that this photo was actually taken on 7/31/10. I'm sorry, but when I saw this beautiful AMC AMX sitting in the parking lot of Beggar's Pizza, I stopped the car and took a picture. I had to! It's a piece of automotive history and it's the type of late 1960's / early 1970's car that I would LOVE to own. For me, there is something very desirable about a car that you don't see everyday. Chevelle's, Mustang's, Camaro's, Pontiac GTO's...you can find them at any classic car meetup. The AMC AMX? Well, if you do find one chances are you will only find one! I've always done my own thing and I've really tried to not follow the crowd. Owning a car like this would certainly go along way towards making sure that doesn't change.

You can read more about the AMC AMX here.

Pizza Night - 7/31/10

Image
Pizza Night - 7/31/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 211 of Project 365. I think it's important for families to have good traditions. It fosters a closeness between parents and children that really builds solid bonds. As an added bonus it also plants the seeds of memories that are looked back upon with fondness by all involved.

Megan and I have a few such traditions. One of our longest standing traditions is a Saturday night pizza. Normally, we'll go to Beggar's Pizza in Oak Forest...but we have been known to try new places as well. This time, though, was a Beggar's Pizza night.

The pizza was delicious and we had a great time - like we always do :)

Glory from above - 7/30/10

Image
Glory from above - 7/30/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 210 of Project 365. I loved the way the sun shone down through this cloud. The picture actually shows it the way I saw it, which is definitely cool.

Cloud lovers, enjoy!!

Who in the Hell is John Eddie? - 7/29/10

Image
Who in the Hell is John Eddie? - 7/29/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 209 of Project 365. I love live music and people that know me, know this. Back in 2003 or 2004 I went to Joe's on Weed Street for a South Side Johnny concert. I had never seen him live before and I was really excited to go. One thing I forgot about though is the inevitable "opening act". I was really dreading having to stand through one or two sets of some guy I'd never heard before.

So I stood there as the opening act took the stage and a very strange thing happened. I liked their music. There was no thought involved...from the first couple of notes on, I really loved everything I heard! I was actually sad when they finished their two encore set. I knew there was no way I was leaving without buying a CD and I'm really glad I did. I've listened to it a lot and it's been one of my favorites over the years.

That was my first exposure to John Eddie. John is originally from the New …
