The Cell - 6/27/10

Image
The Cell - 6/27/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 177 of Project 365. Sunday was a beautiful day for baseball! I was sitting in right field with my co-worker Danny and former co-worker Jim & Jim's friend. Of course I can't remember this friend's name. I suck at remembering names...especially when the name does NOT belong to a hot woman. Anyway, the sun was shining brightly for the most part, but near the end of the game a few clouds rolled in.

Even though the White Sox lost (and to the hated Cubs), it was still a good day.

Lazy Afternoon - 6/26/10

Image
Lazy Afternoon - 6/26/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 176 of Project 365. It was a lazy day. I was so lazy that I almost forgot to snap the picture...

Lucky for all of you, I remembered before the sun was completely gone. *snicker*

My view from my lawn chair...yes...the one that had the spider.

And he sat down beside her... 6/25/10

And he sat down beside her... 6/25/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 175 of Project 365. I really try to keep things different with my photos, but when I got home from work on Friday, I saw Mr. Spider had moved. I was going to skip taking a shot, but then I realized that this shot actually shows how big the spider is.

So....

Sorry Sarah ;)

And along came a spider - 6/24/10

And along came a spider - 6/24/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 174 of Project 365. Late afternoon on my balcony, I noticed that one of my deck chairs was being occupied by a new resident. I was able to get rather close for this picture. I tried getting closer after I snapped this, but as I did the spider took off for the underside of the chair.

*Note to self* Be sure to check the chairs before sitting down...

Chicago Skyline post storm - 6/23/10

Image
Chicago Skyline post storm - 6/23/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 173 of Project 365. I had tickets to the Chicago White Sox game on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had a date with the City of Chicago that night too. It was an epic night for stormy weather! The City of Chicago set off the tornado sirens and lightning actually struck the three tallest buildings in Chicago simultaneously! I was not lucky enough to see that first hand and by all accounts this shot was taken about an hour later.

Storm Clouds - 6/22/10

Image
Storm Clouds - 6/22/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 172 of Project 365. June has been a rough weather month for the Chicago area. In fact, I can't remember a June that's ever been this stormy. Granted, I can't remember what I had for breakfast...so this might not be saying much.

After this picture was taken, we were hit with very strong storms.

Flowers, Part 3 - 6/21/10

Image
Flowers, Part 3 - 6/21/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 171of Project 365. Flower lovers, rejoice! We have a planter box that Art built around one of the trees in the backyard. The planter box is big enough and sturdy enough that it could double as a bench.

I have no idea what these plants/flowers are called, so I'll let you tell me via the comments section. Lazy, I know, but on a gorgeous Friday afternoon, that's about all you are going to get from me.

Father's Day - 6/20/10

Image
Father's Day - 6/20/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 170 of Project 365. Last Sunday was Father's Day. I lost my father in November of 1990. That will be 20 years in November of this year. There are days when I can't believe it's been almost 20 years already and then there are days where I feel like it's been much longer than 20 years. It pains me to feel that all of those memories are slowly slipping away. Earl was technically my stepfather, but he adopted me and my sister and treated us as his own when he married my mother. Me and my sister both loved him dearly. I'll certainly never forget the evening he passed away. The picture above is from my Mom & Dad's wedding.

I've been going through old photo's this past week and it was definitely harder than I anticipated. Maybe it's just me, but life is certainly different when both of your parents have passed away.

The photo below was taken a year or two before my dad passed away. The fa…

HTC EVO 4G review

I've been an iPhone user for the past two years. I will readily admit that overall, I've had a lot of good experiences with my iPhone. A lot of their features really did "just work" for me. I never paid attention to Android based phones after reading the reviews of the models that came out over a year ago. My daughter works for T-Mobile and she has an HTC phone - after looking at it for a few moments I handed it back. I was impressed with the hardware. However, like I said, I didn't pay attention to other phones. In fact, I didn't even hear about the HTC EVO 4G until the day it was released! After reading countless reviews, watching numerous videos and reading hundreds of Android Forum posts, I got the urge to check out the EVO 4G for myself.

I like to call myself an educated consumer. I take pride in doing my research before making major purchases and 99% of the time that serves me well. This is another one of those times. After all the research I did, th…

Blue Sky - 6/19/10

Image
Blue Sky - 6/19/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 169 of Project 365. Today turned out to be a beautiful day. Up until tonight, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. As Megan and I headed out to get pizza, I stopped to snap this picture.

Secret Squirrel - 6/18/10

Image
Secret Squirrel - 6/18/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 168 of Project 365. Say hello to my little friend. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be a chipmunk? Or perhaps a squirrel? For my purposes, I think I'll just say he's a squirrel. Regardless, he resides a few feet away from the star of yesterday's photo, the Daffodil.

Our flowered areas have many touches like this. It's gives the place character, if you ask me.

Daffodil - 6/17/10

Image
Daffodil - 6/17/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 167 of Project 365. If you were to take a walk through our backyard, you would see a lot of different flowers. There was a noticeable lack of wind, so I figured I would snap a shot of this daffodil. It turned out pretty good. Normally in the backyard we get tons of wind and trying to focus on something like this daffodil would usually prove to be an exercise in frustration.

Sometimes you have to take the shots when you can...not when you want to.

Office View - 6/16/10

Image
Office View - 6/16/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 166 of Project 365. I'm really digging the auto focus on the EVO 4G. Here's a shot from my 12th floor office at Madison & Dearborn. In this shot, I focused on the clouds. The shots where I focused on the buildings resulted in a washed out sky.

Unfortunately my desk faces away from the windows...so who knows? I might be missing out on tons of cool shots.

Sears Tower distance test - 6/15/10

Image
Sears Tower distance test - 6/15/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 165 of Project 365. Ok, I know I said yesterday's picture was the last "repeat" photo. But I totally forgot that I didn't try out the HTC EVO 4G's camera on distance subjects. So, here is another shot from the Washington Street bridge facing east. The Sears (WutChoTalkinAboutWillis) Tower is much clearer with this camera.

If there's one thing that's becoming readily apparent, it's that using the iPhone camera is pretty much a point and click affair while using the HTC EVO 4G is much more like an actual camera.

Flowers, Part 2 - 6/14/10

Image
Flowers, Part 2 - 6/14/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 164 of Project 365. This will probably be the last subject I consciously re-shoot. The flowers themselves look fine, but I noticed the background is all washed out. Another thing I've noticed is the auto focus seems to work much better on the HTC EVO 4G than it did on the iPhone 3GS.

Another bonus of the camera on the HTC EVO 4G is that you can hold the touch screen to auto focus and if you hold your finger on the screen the camera will take the picture. It's been my experience so far that it really helps to take clearer pictures.

One difference between this shot and the shot I took on June 6th is the colors. I'll have to play around with the settings and see if I can give the colors a bit more warmth. Also, this shot was taken from a different side.

Rusty! - 06/13/10

Image
Rusty! - 06/13/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 163 of Project 365. I can see this tree from my bed when I wake up in the morning. I've spent many of those mornings laying in bed, watching the branches sway in the breeze. I find comfort in that. The tree looks gorgeous covered in snow too.

I've photographed this tree before, but not with the new phone. Can you spot Rusty?

Fountain - 6/12/10

Image
Fountain - 6/12/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 162 of Project 365. I have mentioned before how our backyard at the apartment is not your typical apartment backyard. It certainly does have a home feeling to it.

Art & Maryann put this bird fountain in about two summers ago. It's electric and it works great. It's also adds a very personal touch to the property.

Since I'm using the new phone to take photos, I needed an easy target. I'm still playing around with the phone's setting, but so far I'm very happy with the camera.

Origami - 6/11/10

Image
Origami - 6/11/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 161 of Project 365. Up until my post on 6/09/10, the vast majority of my photos have been taken with my iPhone 3GS. The post on 6/10/10 and this post were taken with my new Smartphone - the Sprint HTC EVO 4G. The iPhone had a 3.1 megapixel camera. The HTC EVO 4G has an 8 megapixel camera. The iPhone did not have a flash. The HTC EVO 4G has dual flashes. It should be interesting to see how much my photos change going forward. Oh, and yes...yes...I realize that image quality is dependent upon so many other criteria as well, like shutter speed, ISO settings and what not.

My rockin' co-worker, Elise, made this Pterodactyl for me a few months ago. For the curious - she made it on paper that's adorned with...flying squirrels.

How cool is that?

GO Blackhawks! - 6/10/10

Image
GO Blackhawks! - 6/10/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 160 of Project 365. Chicago was overcome with Chicago Blackhawks fever last week and for good reason - The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup! It was their first Stanley Cup series victory in 49 years!

All throughout Chicago, thousands of fans were wearing their Blackhawks gear to work. My office was no exception. My co-workers, Danny & Ted, were more than happy to pose for a picture.

Architecture - 6/09/10

Image
Architecture - 6/09/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 159 of Project 365. I've always been intrigued by the architecture of the buildings in Chicago. This building is directly across the street from Daley Plaza.

It's the home of the First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple.

Harold Baines - 6/08/10

Image
Harold Baines - 6/08/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 158 of Project 365. I had the good fortune to go to the White Sox game last night with a couple of new friends I met via Twitter. KellyMarie ( @girlinthecity ) knew I was a Sox fan and when Groupon had their Sox ticket special back in May, she contacted me about wanting tickets. In all, there were 5 of us. In addition to KellyMarie, I met Jen ( @AJRoxMyWhiteSox ) from Twitter too. KellyMarie also invited a friend from her college years - Derek & Derek's friend...Lisa...I believe. It was a great evening!

Well, a great evening except for one small little detail: I forgot to bring my glasses with me! Trying to watch the game without glasses gets to be pretty painful after about 2 innings. It was totally my fault, though...so I dealt with it.

During the break between the top and bottom half of the 8th inning, I got up to stretch my legs and as I walked past the bronze statue of Harold Baines, I knew I'd have to take …

Statue - 6/07/10

Image
Statue - 6/07/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 157 of Project 365. The Starbucks down the block from where I work is in the lobby of a building as most Starbucks in Downtown Chicago tend to be. This building has a name but as I pointed out in a preview photo post: I don't know what it is. Honestly, I'm not feeling industrious enough to research it either. Anyway, occasionally, I walk through the lobby of this unidentified building as I make my way to the Starbucks.

I've walked past this statue in the lobby countless times. The statue has no identifying name plaque and honestly? I'm not artsy enough to even hazard a guess.

So, unidentified lobby statue, here's to you!

Flowers - 6/06/10

Image
Flowers - 6/06/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 156 of Project 365. During a break in the rain and the clouds, I went down stairs to the back yard and I snapped this picture. The landlord's husband made this flower holder years ago and it's holding up fine.

Megan - 6/05/10

Image
Megan - 6/05/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 155 of Project 365. Megan at Beggars Pizza. The restaurant was practically deserted Saturday night.

More clouds? - 06/04/10

Image
More clouds? - 06/04/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 154 of Project 365. I had not been paying my attention to the Android phone craze until recently. Besides seeing my oldest daughters Android based phone, I really have not had any exposure to them. Honestly, I don't think the Droid radio commercials really count, you know?

A news story caught my eye on Friday...a new Android based phone was out and the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. So after work on Friday, I went to the local Radio Shack looking to check one out. Of course, every place by me was sold out. As I walked back to my car, I noticed the clouds off in the distance. I love clouds and I find the vast number of ways they take shape to be incredible.

And the heavens opened up... - 6/03/10

Image
And the heavens opened up... - 6/03/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 153 of Project 365. Standing at the Oak Forest train station, I often get the chance to take in the sky while waiting for the train. I snapped this with my iPhone, facing East.

My sun is bigger than your sun - 6/02/10

Image
My sun is bigger than your sun - 6/02/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 152 of Project 365. I have a confession. I've been working in the Loop for the past 10 years and I've never really bothered to learn the names of the buildings. If you are from Chicago, and work downtown, you know how lame this truly is.

*Sigh*

Anyway, I work a block away from Daley Plaza and the next block over is the new CBS Studio which I call...The CBS Building. I'm not sure if anyone else calls it that, but there you go.

I took a detour last night on my way to the train station and I caught a glimpse of the sun reflecting off of the mirrored windows of the CBS Building. I couldn't help but notice how big the Sun appeared to be. Hard to believe I almost missed that.

Clouds - 6/01/10

Image
Clouds - 6/01/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 151 of Project 365. We had more rain over night in the south suburbs and it cleared out that morning. This shot, facing East, shows the departure of the storm clouds.

It was good to see the Sun make an appearance!

Midnight Lightning - 5/31/10

Image
Midnight Lightning - 5/31/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin.

Day 150 of Project 365. I actually went to bed without taking my picture for the day. I figured...well...I'll just double up tomorrow. In fact, the sweet siren song of sleep had just about pulled me under, when the deep, rumbling boom of thunder instantly brought me back to reality.

A storm and a very strong one at that had moved into the area. I laid in bed and watched the lightning fill the midnight sky. And for once, I actually remembered to attempt to take pictures!

See? I'm learning. Granted, it's still taking me a while...

So, this was taken at just before or just after midnight. As you can see, lightning has a way of turning the deep of night into day. Even if just for the briefest of moments. The bolt of lightning in the background is not responsible for this picture - it was at the end of another bolt of lightning further off in the distance. Click the picture to go my Flickr page where I have a few mo…

Happy Anniversary - 5/30/10

Image
Happy Anniversary - 5/30/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 149 of Project 365. My Aunt Lisa and Uncle Richard celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday. My uncle had a BBQ to celebrate Memorial Day and the anniversary celebration was a surprise for Lisa. Needless to say, Lisa was surprised!

This is probably going to stand as record for the most cake pictures in one week for me. May was a very good and tasty month!

Haze - 5/29/10

Image
Haze - 5/29/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 148 of Project 365. Sometimes I take a cab back to work from West Look Chiro. Sometimes I walk. Really depends on the weather. This is the view from the I-90/94 Washington Street bridge facing East.

Unfortunately, this shot really shows off one of the iPhone camera's major shortcomings - Distance shots.
