We love cake! - 5/28/10

We love cake! - 5/27/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 147 of Project 365. I know I'm milking the Birthday pics this week, but what can I say? Oh yeah..."my blog, my rules"!

In my defense, this was taken by my ex-wife on Sunday and she sent it to me last night. Now I'm not saying this excuse would hold up in a Court of Law, but there you go. How cool is it to have an ex-wife that would buy you a Birthday cake? Pretty damned cool, I'd say.

The weather has been great, It's been an awesome week, I feel more loved now than I have in years and life is good.

Turkish Bazaar - 5/27/10

Turkish Bazaar - 5/27/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 146 of Project 365. One of the neat things about Daley Plaza is that the City of Chicago hosts a ton of ethnic fairs & fests throughout the year. This past week was Turkish Fest (or something similar to that effect). There were food tents, jewelry tents and even travel tents.

On Wednesday, I convinced my totally awesome co-worker Karen that an after lunch smoothie run would be a great idea. She agreed! After going to Jamba Juice we ended up at the Daley Center. Karen is posing, Jamba Juice in hand, next to one of the jewelry tent displays.

Post-birthday Pie - 5/26/10

Post-birthday Pie - 5/26/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 145 of Project 365. I had plans after work on my birthday and of course it didn't occur to me to see if I could get my daughter before making those plans. That was very odd seeing as how my ex-wife is great about letting me see Megan whenever I want. By they time the ex-wife offered, I already had the plans.

So, I did the next best thing - I picked up Megan tonight. We headed up to the local Bakers Square for some pie. Megan didn't mind, after all pie is pie regardless of what day you get it :)

In case you were wondering? The pie was delicious.

Retro Tom - 1st Grade - 5/25/10

Retro Tom - 1st Grade - 5/25/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 144 of Project 365. So, today is my birthday. I'm not real wild about being 42, but I am making the best of it. I was looking through some photos last night and I thought that this would make a nice retro picture. Gotta love that shirt!! I'm guessing that this picture is from...oh...1974.

Happy Birthday to me :)

Backyard - 5/24/10

Backyard - 5/24/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 143 of Project 365. For an apartment building, we sure do have a pretty nice back yard. Nicer than any other apartment building I've seen in my area. That's one thing I love about the building I live in. The landlords really do a great job keeping up the outside. We've got two gardens, a big picnic table, a couple of swings and a very nice evening breeze. Click on the picture to go to my Flickr page - this picture has secret notes ;)

Thankfully, summer time is quickly approaching :)

This was taken tonight just after my run.

Freshly polished Rabbit - 5/23/10

Freshly polished Rabbit - 5/23/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 142 of Project 365. Late May in Chicago and it looks like great weather is finally here! This was a very low-key weekend, yet I still managed to get my beloved Rabbit a much needed wash and wax. I really prefer to wax the Rabbit myself but honestly, it's just too hard to do without a garage. On most car waxes you'll see the warning to "Only wax in a cool, shaded area" and apartment living does not make that easy. In fact, I've found that apartment living makes it damn near impossible.

So on Sunday, I did the next best thing - I went up to the local Delta-Sonic car wash and for a small fee of $29.00 they waxed the car by hand. They actually did a really good job as well. Not too shabby seeing as how it only took them 20 minutes to do the entire car. There really is power in numbers.

Now I REALLY want to go on a road trip!

Lazy Saturday - 5/22/10

Lazy Saturday - 5/22/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 141 of Project 365. I had just returned home with Megan after our trip to Beggars Pizza and I noticed the clouds above the apartments across the street. Eight hours earlier in the day I had thought that a shot like this would have been impossible - it was that foggy this morning. Eventually though, the sun did make an appearance and luckily it was out for most of the afternoon. All in all, not a bad day.

Sorry William, you tiger now - 5/21/10

Sorry William, you tiger now - 5/21/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 140 of Project 365. Being from Michigan, my co-worker William is a die hard Detroit fan. The Lions, The Redwings and of course The Tigers...William loves them all.

I heard a ruckus earlier today and when I went to see what the noise was all about, I found William slipping into his brand new tiger costume. Seriously. How could I not take a picture?

William likes to go to US Cellular Field to watch The White Sox play, but only when The Tigers are in town. His evil plan: To wear the tiger costume to the games. I think he doesn't make it past the third inning!

Steve's Deli - 5/20/10

Steve's Deli - 5/20/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 139 of Project 365. Nothing turns a good day into a great day better than a wonderful lunch with fabulous friends! Today I met up with the charming and delightfully dynamic duo of Meredith (@randommsugirl on Twitter) and Amy (@interactiveAmy on Twitter) at Steve's Deli on Hubbard Street.

Steve's Deli originally opened up in Michigan, but luckily for Chicago, they opened up a second store here in Chicago. I've been there twice so far and I must say I've been impressed with the food. Today I had the Hot Turkey Sandwich served on white bread with mashed potatoes & gravy and let me tell was delicious! Steve's Deli is on Twitter and you can follow them at @StevesDeli.

Steve's Deli is another Chicago business that is using Social Media and specifically Twitter & FourSquare to interact and actually engage with their customers. Customers checking in on Twitter and FourSquare are often rewa…

Daley Plaza - 5/19/10

Daley Plaza - 5/19/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 138 of Project 365. The City of Chicago often spruces up local attractions in honor of holidays, special events and local sports teams. This is the fountain at Daley Plaza. For those not in the know, Daley Plaza is part of the Richard J. Daley Center which was named after long time mayor Richard J. Daley. Anyway, in honor of the Chicago Blackhawks being in the NHL Playoffs, the water has been dyed red.

Some interesting facts about the Daley Center* :

1) It's the tallest building in the world with fewer than 40 stories. A typical 648-foot (198 m) building would have 50-60 stories.*

2) The Blues Brothers movie featured the Daley Center as well as the movies The Fugitive and The Dark Knight.*

3) The plaza is dominated by an untitled Cor-ten steel 50-foot (15 m) sculpture by Pablo Picasso (usually called "The Picasso"). Completed in 1967, it was a gift to the City of Chicago from the artist. Though controversial for …

Clouds at the train station - 5/18/10

Clouds at the train station - 5/18/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 137 of Project 365. This shot didn't turn out how I had hoped. In fact, this shot showcases the iPhones camera shortcomings perfectly. Anyway, I love clouds and sky pictures so you're being subjected to it regardless :p

This was taken at the Oak Forest train station.

Morning Calm - 5/17/10

Morning Calm - 5/17/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 136 of Project 365. Just a calm morning.

Road Trip! - 5/16/10

Road Trip! - 5/16/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 135 of Project 365. Sunday night was a nice night for a drive. This time I headed into Indiana. For those that don't know, I love to jump in the car and just go. I rarely ever need a destination or a reason.

What can I say? I've always found driving to be relaxing.

Train's a comin' - 5/15/10

Train's a comin' - 5/15/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 134 of Project 365. This was taken at the Oak Forest train station. The train in the picture was actually heading towards Joliet. The Chicago-bound train normally runs on the other side of the tracks.

West Loop Chiro - 5/14/10

West Loop Chiro - 5/14/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 133 of Project 365. Behold the power of Twitter! I met Dr. Rosen, the owner of West Loop Chiro, at a Tweetup back in April. During our conversation I mentioned I'm a runner and after talking for a bit he invited me in for a visit. I had never been to a Chiropractor before and I really didn't know what to expect.

From the very first visit, the staff at West Loop Chiro were great and they did a wonderful job explaining everything to me. I highly recommend them if you are in the Chicago area!

You can follow Dr. Rosen on Twitter here

Vertigo Lounge - 5/13/10

Vertigo Lounge - 5/13/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 132 of Project 365. Have you ever noticed how much I love the "This is my blog, my rules" way of thinking? Ahem, anyway, this was taken at the Vertigo Lounge on Tuesday night. I believe the lounge is on the 25th floor. They have an awesome outdoor area which really gives a great view of the city. I loved the way the foggy night gave the lights of the city an eerie glow. Also of note, the outdoor heaters and flame pits.

River Walk - 5/12/10

River Walk - 5/12/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 131 of Project 365. This was taken while walking along Wacker Drive. As you can see, the City of Chicago has gone to great lengths to make the river a very enjoyable place to be.

Bright Lights, Big City - 5/11/10

Bright Lights, Big City - 5/11/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 130 of Project 365. Well, he did it again. Sami Ari hosted yet another awesome Tweetup, this time at the Vertigo Sky Lounge. There was a great turnout and I got to meet some more awesome people. I met some Twitter friends in real life for the first time and I got to hang out with some existing Twitter friends too. I even made new friends, how cool is that?

After the event, I went on a nice leisurely walk back to the Grant Park parking garage. As I was crossing the Chicago River, I stopped on the State Street bridge to grab this picture.

What a great evening!

Not a cloud in the sky - 5/10/10

Not a cloud in the sky - 5/10/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 129 of Project 365. I completely believe that sunshine is good for our mental health and well-being. Nothing makes me happier then rolling out of bed and seeing that bright orange ball of fire in the sky. If that doesn't say "Today will be a good day", nothing does.

Cityscape - 5/09/10

Cityscape - 5/09/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 128 of Project 365. This was taken from the Clark Street bridge, only facing the other direction. What a difference a change in direction can make on the ambient lighting.

Sundown in the city - 5/08/10

Sundown in the city - 5/08/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 127 of Project 365. This was taken from the Clark Street bridge, just before the sun was completely down. I like this shot because it reminds me of canyon, only this canyon is made out of steel & glass instead of rock.

Puma Store - 5/07/10

Puma Store - 5/07/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 126 of Project 365. There is a newer Puma store about a block from where I work. I've been looking forward to checking it out and I finally did so last week. They've got some pretty cool stuff and I got what I was looking for - A workout jacket (that will, of course, never be worn while working out)

Best part? It was 35% off which pretty much made it a "must buy".

So you want to start running, eh?

I've had a few conversations lately with people that are interested in getting into running. So, with that in mind, I figured now was as good a time as any to write about the subject. I've been running since 1984 and I've tried a lot of different things. I've seen a lot of fads come and go.  Here is some general advice for the novice runner.

1) Go to a runners shoe store and get fitted for running shoes by an actual professional. I love Famous Footware as much as the next person, but you'll never see me buy my running shoes there. A runners shoe store will be staffed by adult running enthusiasts with years of running experience. People with a keen understanding of what runners go through while training. A good, experienced salesperson will suggest a few different shoes based off of your weight, your foot width, the arches of your feet, your striking pattern and your goals. The sales person will make sure that the shoes you buy are the correct size as w…

Good Morning - 5/06/10

Good Morning - 5/06/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 125 of Project 365. I live on the second floor and during the week, I leave my blinds open. As a bachelor it helps me to not sleep in. Oh don't get me wrong, I love sleeping in...It's just not conducive to keeping a job.

I woke up this morning and saw this and I knew today would be a good day. And it was.

Dream Home - 5/05/10

Dream Home - 5/05/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 124 of Project 365. I was walking back to work to pick up my backpack after the Cinco de Mayo event at the Superior House when I noticed this home across the street. Plopped in between the modern high rises, this gem really stands out. My mind thinks back about how things must have been back when this home was originally built.

How old is the house? How many rooms? I'll probably never know, but that's ok. It's good to see things out of the past in modern times. It's like a window to the way things used to be and I take comfort in that.

Naughty Monkey - 5/04/10

Naughty Monkey - 5/04/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 123 of Project 365. I went out at lunch time with my totally awesome co-worker, Karen, and we stopped at Macy's. Karen wanted shoes.

I readily admit that I can be a bit immature and I'm really sorry about it...but when I see "Naughty Monkey" stenciled on the wall of one of Macy's flagship stores? Yeah, I'm totally taking a picture of that.

Starbucks Sunset - 5/03/10

Starbucks Sunset - 5/03/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 122 of Project 365. Have you noticed I have a thing for sunsets? No? Hmm, that's odd...

Anyway, yes!! I love sunsets (sunrises too) and when I stopped in the Tinley Park Starbucks on Monday night I was fortunate enough to be able to snap this picture. I love the way the light makes the clouds glow.

Drive - 5/02/10

Drive - 5/02/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 121 of Project 365. Driving home from an awesome Cajun restaurant in (would you believe) Plainfield, Illinois? Yeah, me neither...but yes!! The food was awesome and completely reminded me of my last trip to New Orleans. It might have been my first time there, but it certainly won't be my last.

Oh, I suppose I should at least name the restaurant in question: Moe Joe's

Nighttime Chicago - 5/01/10

Nighttime Chicago - 5/01/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 120 of Project 365. I liked this shot from Friday so much, that I'm using for Saturday's picture. My blog, my rules, remember?

This is from the 80th floor of the AON Center, downtown Chicago. The view faces south. If you are seeing this post on my blog, be sure to click the image to go to my Flickr page. The Flickr image has notes embedded.

Stormy, awesome night - 4/30/10

Stormy, awesome night - 4/30/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 119 of Project 365. Friday night I had the good fortune of attending the launch event for the return of "Dine With D.C.".

D.C. showcases the restaurants featured on this season's episodes of Game Time Dine. The event was at The Mid-America Club located on the 80th floor of the AON Center in downtown Chicago.

As you can see, the view from the AON Center is spectacular.
