Big Sky - 4/29/10

Big Sky - 4/29/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 118 of Project 365. When I woke up this morning, I could see a vibrant red glow on my ceiling. I sat up, looked out the window and saw that the sky was ablaze in color. By the time I realized this would be a nice photo, it was already starting to mellow out.

Had I thought about taking a photo when I first sat up, this would have been a much better shot.

Bread, Amish style - 4/28/10

Bread, Amish style - 4/28/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 117 of Project 365. I was talking via AIM with my totally awesome co-worker Karen (pictured above) about stopping by the Amish grocery store that's about 2 blocks from work. Yes, you read that right...the Amish grocery store that's in the heart of downtown Chicago. The people that work there have an innocence about them that is really quite special. The way they talk and conduct's like being in a time-warp. Turns out they were from Indiana. They carry a ton of delicious looking items and I can't wait to go back. I can hear the sweet siren call of baked goods...

Karen is a self proclaimed bread lover, so here she is posing with her bounty right outside the store.

All in all, a pretty great day - tasty food and a totally awesome co-worker. Now if that lottery ticket would win...

Mom - 4/27/10

Mom - 4/27/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 116 of Project 365. April 27th would have been my Mother's birthday. She really loved this picture.

I miss you mom.

Run Progress - 4/26/10

Run Progress - 4/26/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 115 of Project 365. My running has been progressing nicely. Today was my best run to date on the slightly less than 4 mile course that I run when at work. Last week I ran 4 days in a row. This week, I'm going to run 2 days in a row...a day of rest...then 2 days in a row. I think I'm getting close to a turning point - the under 7 minute mile. Now just to clarify, if I was running the way I used to run, I'd be in the 6 minute mile range already. But I've been training a different way and the progress is slower. However, if I want to stay injury free this is the way I have to do it.

So far, so good!

Birthday Girl - 4/25/10

Birthday Girl - 4/25/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 114 of Project 365. My grand daughter had her 3rd Birthday Party on Sunday! My daughter Amanda did a great job as the hostess and this was taken in their kitchen. With everything that was going on, it's a miracle I was able to get this picture...

Wishful Thinking - 4/24/10

Wishful Thinking - 4/24/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 113 of Project 365. The whole purpose of a picture is to relive a moment in time, right? Be it good or bad, a picture is supposed to help remind us of what has already been. I was thinking about this on Saturday. The weather in Chicago was pretty crappy, so instead of using what nature gave me, I went back to a unused picture from earlier in the week.

This is how I wanted my Saturday...

...and for a moment in time, this is how it was.

VW, HUH? - 4/23/10

VW, HUH? - 4/23/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 112 of Project 365. I've always loved Volkswagens. My first car was a 1981 VW Jetta. My mom owned her fair share of VW's back in her day. While I was never a fan of the old style Beetles, the new ones are nice and I can see why people love them.

Walking through the Grant Park parking garage, I was stopped dead in my tracks by this, this...pig beetle. It's certainly not my style, but you have to is unique.

Bad Motor Scooter - 4/22/10

Bad Motor Scooter - 4/22/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 111 of Project 365. Today is Earth Day. I celebrated by going to Steve Green's ( @steveGOgreen ) Earth Day event at the Flair Tower ( @FlairTower222 ). The place was packed. Steve really knows how to host an event and the Flair Tower is fantastic.

I had the good fortune of meeting some very wonderful people. Some that are not on twitter, like Amanda and Han and some that are, like @Anna_n_Chicago, @mafiahairdresser & @chicagodmblover. Also got to see @AngelaWoody & @WestLoopChiro which is always fabulous.

And, and, and, I had the chance to talk with one of Chicago's First Ladies of Fun, my friend @JenChicago. How cool is that? I know you're jealous and you should be. She is THAT awesome. Her red motor scooter is pretty sweet too.

So. How did you spend your Earth Day? Tell me all about it below.

Tweet! - 4/21/10

Tweet! - 4/21/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 110 of Project 365. I've been a big fan of Twitter ever since I heard about the service back in 2007. My first exposure to Twitter came while reading one of my favorite magazines: Maximum PC. I tend to want to try a lot of the things I read about in Maximum PC and Twitter was no exception. It started off innocently by play narratives about what I had to eat for lunch and what not, but then I discovered what happens if you actually connect with people on Twitter.

Restraining orders.

I'm kidding, really.

No, using Twitter to connect with people instantly expands your circle of friends. The coolest thing too is that so far everyone I have met in real life has been just as cool, just as awesome in person as they were online. Talk about a total win.

My friend and co-worker Elise knows about my Twitter habit and she drew the picture for me. How cool is that?

I'd say very cool.

All Aboard!! - 4/20/10

All Aboard!! - 4/20/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 109 of Project 365. When I take the train home, I'm almost always on the 6:15 and I'm always in the last car. I stand in the vestibule because I'm just too cool for school. Actually, my friends all stand in there with me. This was a rare day were the train pulled in early and only Mary (not pictured) was with me. Soon after this was taken, Russ and Dan also joined the party.

We tell inappropriate jokes and generally misbehave.

Good times :)

Photo of the Day Challenge #1 - 4/19/10

Photo of the Day Challenge #1 - 4/19/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 108 of Project 365. This post is in response to the wonderful and truly awesome Christa Watson. Read about her photo challenge here!

Since I'm stuck with an iPhone camera at the moment, I was limited to the picture you see: Bushnell Binoculars. It was the best I could do for I don't own fancy-pants camera lenses.

Enjoy! (or not)

"Tom, can you fix it?" - 4/18/10

"Tom, can you fix it?" - 4/18/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 107 of Project 365. For those that don't know, I build & fix computers. Hardware problems, virus removals, setting up home networks, helping people buy the right equipment...I pretty much do it all. Friday afternoon I got a call from an older gentleman that I've done work for in the past. Friday's call was about the new monitor he purchased for his desktop. I did some minor troubleshooting over the phone by asking the standard questions:

"Is is plugged in?", "Did you turn the PC on?", "Do you have all the cables hooked up?"...

Harold spoke up when I asked about having the cables hooked up...

"Harold, what do you mean there is nowhere on the PC for you to plug the monitor cable into?"

He finally said he couldn't figure it out, so I offered to swing by this weekend. I got there today and went to the PC. I checked the monitor...yes, everything wa…

Tom doesn't drink? Absolutely! - 4/17/10

Tom doesn't drink? Absolutely! - 4/17/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 106 of Project 365. Friday's photo made me think about things. Namely, why keep a bottle of Jack Daniel's in the house if I'm done drinking? I don't know, really. I was thinking about this when I went into the freezer on Saturday night. I was grabbing some ice and I felt like I was in a bad sitcom. Right there in the freezer was an unopened bottle of Absolute Vodka. *Cue the laugh track*

Hypocrite much, Tom?

The bottle has never been opened and it went right into the freezer when I bought it a couple of years ago. The bottles purpose is for company should I ever entertain anyone that wants a drink. I'll leave you to judge my popularity seeing as how the bottle has never been touched...

But anyway, that bottle has served me well a few times since it took up residence in my freezer. Wrapped in a towel, I've found it to be wonderful relief from stiff necks and migraine-type headac…

Jack Daniel's - 4/16/10

Jack Daniel's - 4/16/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 105 of Project 365. Back in the day, I used to drink a lot of Jack Daniel's. Jack & Coke, shots of Jack & even Jack over ice. Those days are gone though and this dust covered bottle in my kitchen can attest to that. I got this bottle as a gift for fixing someone's PC a few years ago. It was opened, but not touched after that. I don't have a problem with alcohol - we broke up last August and we've not spoken since.

No loss.

As the song says...

"...Whiskey got no hold on me
Whiskey got no hold on me
Whiskey got no hold on me
I Left them chains in Tennessee
Whiskey got no hold on me..."

Sunset - 4/15/10

Sunset - 4/15/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 104 of Project 365. I pulled into a parking lot after work just in time to see this sunset. I love sunsets. Years ago I remember seeing the sunset at the ocean and once you've seen one, other sunsets just aren't the same. Alas, we make due with what we have.

Facebook FAIL - 4/14/10

Facebook FAIL - 4/14/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Click the picture to see the entire conversation.

Day 103 of Project 365. Facebook is always good for a laugh. But the laughs are always better after you've been to the Facebook Fail website. I might submit this...I might not. This was taken a while ago and I almost forgot about it.

Now that would have been a pity.

Hello, Sun! - 4/13/10

Hello, Sun! - 4/13/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 102 of Project 365. Another morning sun shot. What can I say? I love the sun.

Glasses - 4/12/10

Glasses - 4/12/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 101 of Project 365. I've mentioned getting new glasses in the past they are.

I got them last summer, but this is the first picture of me wearing them. Bet you are thrilled, right?!

Drive - 4/11/10

Drive - 4/11/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 100 of project 365. Back to the car wash. I had to get the remains of the bird attack cleaned up. Thankfully the car wash I go to has a bad weather guarantee.

Nike + - 4/10/10

Nike + - 4/10/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 99 of Project 365. Saturday was a beautiful day!! I normally take Saturdays off from running, but the weather would just not allow it this time. In related news, I seriously love my Nike + and the way it helps me keep track of my runs.

Nothing special, just a run to stretch the legs and be outside.

Workin' at the car wash, yeah! - 4/09/10

Workin' at the car wash, yeah! - 4/09/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 98 of Project 365. I heart my car. This is no secret. But what you might not know is that I firmly believe that the car runs infinitely better when it's clean. Plus the car is black and a complete dirt magnet. I guess the important thing to take from this is that I feel better when the car is clean. It is all about me, right?

Besides, dirty cars make Jesus cry.

Harmonica - 4/08/10

Harmonica - 4/08/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 97 of Project 365. One of the dirty habits I picked up while in the Marine Corps was "playing" the harmonica. I bought my first one in Jacksonville North Carolina - it was a cheap Chinese-made Hohner 'Old Standby" in C. I played the hell of that thing. I took it everywhere, even on road trips. I even brought it with me when I went to the field. Due to the nature of what I did while in the Marines, I had a lot of solo time. Trust me, when you are in a government van driving alone through Iowa at 2 in the morning, a cup of coffee and a harmonica can really keep you awake. Back in the day I could play it semi-decently.

The one in the picture is a newer one that I picked up a few years ago. I was intrigued by the real wood body. This one is made in Germany and it's also in a different key (D) than the original. I still have the original and it's seen better days. I still love the way it sounds too.

Quiet Night - 4/07/10

Quiet Night - 4/07/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 96 of Project 365. Just a quiet Tuesday night. I love my trees and I really love the way they allow me to sit on my balcony without being seen.

Sleep - 4/06/10

Sleep - 4/06/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 95 of Project 365. Sleep!! It's no secret that I love my sleep. It's also no secret that I love to lay in bed after the alarm has gone off. Sometimes a little too long. One of my evil minions must have * cough* snapped this photo *cough*.

That's my story at least.

Easter - 4/05/10

Easter - 4/05/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 94 of Project 365. Ever since my mom passed away, I've been going to my aunt & uncle's place for the holidays. As you can tell from the ham in the picture, that's not a bad thing at all.

Kudos to my Aunt Lisa for another holiday meal well done!

Easter storm - 4/04/10

Easter storm - 3/04/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 93 of Project 365. Today was Easter Sunday. It started out on a very pleasant note, with plenty of sunshine. Like a typical Easter though, the afternoon grew dark and the rain clouds crashed the party. There was quite a bit of lighting, but let's face it - I'm entirely too lazy to wait, so you'll have to take my word for it.

Converse - 4/03/10

Converse - 4/03/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 92 of Project 365. I've never owned a pair of Converse All Stars (as Meg likes to call them). Meg loves hers and was disappointed that I didn't own my own pair.

This wasn't my weekend to have Meg, so I figured I'd surprise her and buy my own pair. She will be shocked and probably very happy that we can both go out in Converse All Stars when she is here for the weekend :)

Clouds 4/02/10

Clouds 4/02/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 91 of Project 365. I had a vacation day on Friday and I decided to go on a run. After my run I sat down in our back yard and snapped this picture of the clouds.
