Clark Street - 3/31/10

Building & Loan? - 3/31/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 89 of Project 365. A co-worker had a going away party tonight at Fado's. On my way to the parking garage, I was walking down Clark Street when I looked up and noticed the way the building in the center of the picture was illuminated. I thought it looked cool, so here it is.

Tower of Power - 3/30/10

Tower of Power - 3/30/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 88 of Project 365. I made a reference to a humbucker pickup in my last Photo 365 post, so I figured the nice thing to do would be show just what the hell a humbucker pickup looks like.

The long black bar with the 16 silver circles on it? THAT is the humbucker pickup I was referring to. It really increases the range of tones this bass can give off. If you are viewing this on my blog, click the photo to go to my Flickr page - I added notes to the photo.

It's a Fender - 3/29/10

It's a Fender - 3/29/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 87 of Project 365. It's a Fender. Why is that important? Oh...maybe because of all of the music that's been recorded using Fender basses. If you are a fan of Motown, you are a fan of Fender. This particular model is the American made Fender Precision Bass Deluxe. Leo Fender's first electric bass was a Precision bass. See, up until the electric bass, basses were made without frets. Mr. Fender added frets when he designed his first electric bass. In order to play this new electric bass correctly you had to be precise with your finger placement - thus the name Precision bass. What makes this model a deluxe model is the active electronics and the humbucker pickup below the standard Precision pickups

I've had this bass for close to 7 years. It was used on my *cough* smash hit *cough* "Wyl's Shuffle".

Tattoo - 3/28/10

Tattoo - 3/28/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 86 of Project 365. The other day someone was asking me about my Marine Corps tattoo. I can't believe I've had it for almost 20 years now. Still looks pretty good too, for it being almost 20 years old. It's a one of a kind tattoo: I've never seen another Marine with one like it.

For those that are wondering - It's a modified Eagle, Globe & Anchor: the symbol of the Marine Corps. Semper Fi!

Crystal Ball - 3/27/10

Crystal Ball - 3/27/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 85 of Project 365. I had dinner at my Aunt & Uncle's house today. After dinner, I was sitting on the couch and I thought that this crystal ball would make a cool picture. It wasn't until I uploaded it into Flickr that I noticed how the crystal ball flipped the view through the ball upside down.

It's like, science, or something. Anyway, if you are viewing this through my blog, be sure to click on the image to go to my Flickr page - I have a close up the crystal ball there. Kinda like bonus content, but not.

Silly Rabbit! - 3/26/2010

Silly Rabbit! - 3/27/2010, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 84 of Project 365. I bet you didn't know I'm a time traveler, eh? Yes, that's right I said time traveler. Yesterday I stepped into the future, snapped this picture, then came back to the present. I'm good like that, and it's all for you.

So this picture was taken earlier today but I was really going to take it yesterday. My blog, my rules and that's my story.

My beloved 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit. Now with about 8,000 miles on it. I love this car and the car has been good to me as well. Now that the winter is finally behind us, I got the Rabbit all shined up. There is something so cool about driving a clean car, ya know?

Fortune Cookie - 3/25/10

Fortune Cookie - 3/25/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 83 of Project 365. Tonight I attended the Chicago Twestival and it was a completely awesome time. I got to hang out with a bunch of great people that I met over the last few weeks not to mention the wonderful people I met tonight.

I met my Twitter friend Mana face to face on Monday. She turned out to be a very charming woman & I was happy to hear that she was coming to the event tonight. Can you believe she actually made these fortune cookies? Plus each fortune cookie had a different social media fortune in it! Now THAT is creativity.

Great job Mana!

Oh, and in case you were wondering? The cookies were delicious.

Marine Plaque - 3/24/10

Marine Plaque - 3/24/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 82 of Project 365. Once upon a time I was in the Marine Corps. I was officially out of the Marines on April 7th of 2000 and before I got out I was given this plaque.

I've often said I never should have gotten out, but what's done is done. Anyway, this plaque hangs on a wall in my living room.

Good times. Semper Fi!

Hi Sunshine! - 3/23/10

Hi Sunshine! 3/23/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 81 of Project 365. Dusk and dawn are two of my favorite parts of the day. I try to find the beauty in each of them. Dawn is a time to think about the surprises the new day will bring, while dusk is a time to reflect about the day that has been.

I've very happy my windows face both.

Chicago River - 3/22/10

Chicago River - 3/22/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 80 of Project 365. I went to my very first "Tweetup". It was hosted by Sami Ari at The Wit Hotel. What a cool place! This was the view from the roof top bar area. My new friend Mana (Whom I met via Twitter a week or so ago and face to face tonight) snapped a few photos with her cameras. I snapped this one with my iPhone.

Dual monitors - 3/21/10

Dual monitors - 3/21/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 79 of Project 365. Dual monitors at home & dual monitors at work. What can I say? I know I'm spoiled. I also know that I'm 1000% more productive with two screens. At work I could even use a third!

Seriously, the idea of having to go back to one screen is just so...primitive.

Early riser - 3/20/10

Early riser - 3/20/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 78 of Project 365. Why do we hate Monday's? For me, it's probably got something to do with having to get up so damned early. Meh.

Home - 3/19/10

Home - 3/19/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 77 of Project 365. The nice thing about taking pictures with an iPhone is that you can also snap a picture of what's on your iPhone's screen. Like I said before...when it comes to this photo project, I have a tendency to be slightly lazy. Do I get points for actually using my home for the picture? Anyone that's observant enough can figure out which one is mine :)

Anyway, I'll try harder tomorrow - I promise.

Precious Cargo - 3/18/10

Precious Cargo - 3/18/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 76 of Project 365. I'm a slacker about certain things in my life. Things like this photo project, for example. So...last night I was tired & hungry after a long week of working. I walked in the door & went to the fridge only to find that it was empty.

Eventually, after sitting around...and feeling particularly lazy, I jumped back in the car and headed up to White Castle. I felt pretty good about that. After all I do work out a lot. Tasty fast food = mission accomplished.

Lake Shore Drive - 3/17/10

Lake Shore Drive - 3/17/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 75 or Project 365. I had to go into work extra early today, so I figured I'd drive in. I love Lake Shore Drive and this morning I was treated to a pretty cool sunrise. I snapped this while sitting at a stop light. While I did snap a few that were just the lake front, I liked this one because of the way the lights from a passing car looked in the picture.

Coming home was equally nice and you can bet your last dollar that I had Lucinda Williams singing to me in the car.

White Elephant - 3/16/10

White Elephant - 3/16/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 74 of Project 365. Another one of my fathers belongings that was passed down to me. It's (obviously) an elephant that's made out of marble* (not so obviously), I believe. If my memory serves me correctly, this used to sit on my dad's desk at work. Now it sits on my desk at home.

*or it might just be made out of ivory, in which case I'll be heading straight to Hell.

Bass string - 3/15/10

Bass string - 3/15/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 73 of Project 365. I was playing around with my bass tonight and thought this would make an interesting picture. This is the E string. For those that are interested, I put flatwound strings on all of my basses.

Post run - 3/14/10

Post run - 3/14/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 72 of Project 365. The nice thing about Daylight Savings Time is that it's no longer dark out at 6 pm. To celebrate, and work off the pizza from Saturday, I figured a nice 3 mile run would be good. I gotta admit though, it was chillier than I thought it would be. I didn't start warming up until almost the half way point!

Yup, nothing like the flush cheeked look of exertion to show the world that I did, in fact, get off my fat ass today.

Say "CHEESE!" - 3/13/10

Say "CHEESE!" - 3/13/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 71 of Project 365. Megan thought we should share the wealth. She thinks our Beggars Pizza pictures kinda, sorta neglect the wondrous mozzarella sticks they serve.

So smile, mozzarella sticks! Today is your day to shine and steal the spotlight.

p.s. They sure taste much better than they look, honest!

Afternoon delight - 3/12/10

Afternoon delight - 3/12/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 70 of Project 365. Sometimes during the day while at work, I just need to get out of the office. Today was one of those days. I was expecting a phone call anyway, so I snuck out to the Starbucks across the street. The call never happened but the iced coffee sure hit the spot!

All cleaned up! 3/11/10

All cleaned up! 3/11/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 69 of Project 365. I had actual plans tonight and I figured it would be nice to actually dress like an adult for a change. Of course if I was really going to act like an adult, I would have remembered to take a picture at the event. You know, instead of when I got home...right before I changed into sweatpants.

I would have figured that 69 days into this project, I would have made taking pictures a bigger priority instead of a last minute, panic filled exercise in lameness - just about every. single. night.

Yup, I would have figured and I would have been wrong.

Post run - 3/10/10

Post run - 3/10/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 68 of Project 365. It was so nice tonight when I got home from work, that I just had to go for a run. The end.

Do I get a wish or something? - 3/09/10

Do I get a wish or something? - 3/09/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 67 of Project 365. So after working until almost 11:30 tonight, I logged off & headed to bed. About 7 minutes ago I realized that I forgot to take today's picture :( Imagine my surprise as I lined up the shot of my clock radio to see the time was 12:34. What do I win?! I'm supposed to get a wish or something, right?

Foggy Night - 3/08/10

Foggy Night - 3/08/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 66 of Project 365. I got my taxes done tonight after work. On the way home, I couldn't help but notice how foggy it was getting. As I got closer to home, I pulled into the Jewel Express for gas and I actually remembered to take a picture! How about that?

The picture does not do the fog justice. I was actually worried about a zombie attack, the fog was that menacing. I know how much Christa Watson loves night shots AND Christa, this shot's for you.

No strings attached? - 3/07/10

No strings attached? - 3/07/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 65 of Project 365. Now THAT is a badass bass bridge.

Fender - 3/06/10

Fender - 3/06/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 64 of Project 365. I've always listened in wonder when hearing Geddy Lee of Rush play his bass. I know I'm not alone, either. Now while I know I'll never play as good as Geddy, I can still own the same type of bass he plays.

I've recorded a few songs at home using a completely amateurish setup and this is the bass I've used on every single one of them - The Fender Geddy Lee signature Jass Bass. After all these years, I'm still in love with the tone and feel of this bass.

Horizon to horizon
Memory written on the wind
Fading away like an hourglass, grain by grain
Swept away like voices in a hurricane

In a vapor trail

Goodbye, cable - 3/05/10

Goodbye, cable - 3/05/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 63 of Project 365. After balancing my checkbook this morning and seeing that $133.00 monthly Comcast charge leering at me, mocking me, I finally said "ENOUGH!". In this economy, with as much as I watch television, it's a pretty extravagant expense.

So I gave it some thought. I have been watching a lot of Hulu lately. I know when Meg is over she is watching her shows in her bedroom on her PC. I think we can make due without cable TV.

I took a deep breath, picked up my iPhone and I called Comcast. About 10 minutes later, the deed was done. My cable TV service was canceled. My Comcast bill was slashed from $133 per month down to $57 per month! I feel pretty good about that and my bank account feels real good about that.

I'm a pretty tech savvy guy. I did some digging around in my parts closet and sure enough, I had the cables. I wasn't sure how well, if at all, this would work...but it did. Actually, it work…

PC Repair - 3/04/10

PC Repair - 3/04/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 62 of Project 365. I fix PCs when not working the day job. The only problem with doing that at home is that when I've got a patient on my work bench (coffee table *cough*), my living room looks like a tornado hit it.

The patient is actually next to the work bench for this repair. A full recovery is expected and the PC will be back on it's feet in no time. The poor guy blew his hard drive and power supply. The replacements have been installed and now I'm just downloading all the Windows XP service packs.

Too bad I can't figure out a way to do this full time ;)

Mojo Jojo - 3/03/10

Mojo Jojo - 3/03/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 61 of Project 365. My daughter Megan grew up absolutely loving the Powerpuff Girls. I think back to those days when I was forced to watch episode after episode of the show and I'll always remember telling Megan that I was Bubbles. To which she would always reply "No Daddy. You're Mojo Jojo.". Now this might have something to do with the fact that I would howl "I am Mojo Jojo!" as I swooped in and stole her Powerpuff Girls' toys. But I'm not saying for sure.

One year for her Birthday, Megan got a plastic play set of mini Powerpuff Girls and this play set had a mini Mojo Jojo. Megan was very happy! Now she could enlist me to play Powerpuff Girls with her since I could always be the villain and really? How could I turn an offer like that down?

Eventually Megan got older and she lost interest in the Powerpuff Girls. Her mom convinced her that it would be best to get rid of the plastic play set in a …

Shamrock!! 3/02/10

Shamrock!! 3/02/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 60 of Project 365. After a long, cold, Winter what's the best way to celebrate March and the coming of Spring? A Shamrock shake!

Um...or what's left of it anyway ;)

The horn bird - 3/01/10

The horn bird - 3/01/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 59 of Project 365. The horn bird. Nothing says spring time approaches like the beautiful call of the mythical horn bird. Actually, this belonged to my father. At one time this occupied his desk and sometime over the years ended up in my possession.

Maybe I'm just sentimental, but I like having reminders of my parents around the house.
