Beggars Pizza! - 2/28/10

Beggars Pizza! - 2/28/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 58 of Project 365. It's no secret that I have a favorite pizza place close to the house. My all-time favorite place is about 30 miles north of here and that's not really too convenient. So another Saturday night, another Beggars run with Megan. Even though I felt skunky all weekend, Saturday night didn't turn out too bad. Plus we had leftovers to lunch today. Double win!

A great daughter & and excellent pizza. 'Nuff said!

Pelicans - 2/27/10

Pelicans - 2/27/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 57 of Project 365. After posting the picture of the scorpion yesterday, I was thinking about my parents tonight. While sitting on my couch, I looked up and saw the pelican statue that was my mom's. She loved pelicans. She loved them so much that she collected pelican statues. My mom and dad dreamed of retiring to Florida some day and I think her love of pelicans started the first time they went down there.

After my mom passed away, I claimed this one.

Scorpion - 2/25/10

Scorpion - 2/25/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 56 of Project 365. My parents used to go to Las Vegas a lot when they were both still alive. Obviously, back in the day, Las Vegas was strictly off limits for kids. Me and my sister never did go with them.

Um...just who WAS that woman that stayed with us when they were gone?

Anyway, one year my father brought me back this scorpion encased in Lucite. To this day it's still one of my favorite things given to me by my father.

Green Machine - 2/24/10

Green Machine - 2/24/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 55 of Project 365. I build PCs. Kick-ass PCs. Meet my Quad core, 8 gig of RAM, program chewing Behemoth: Green Machine.

Sure, I'm 41 but I feel you're never too old for a blinged out PC - Green lighting FTW!

What's that, you say? You've never heard of the Green Machine? It's the PC that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. I've outrun Imperial PCs. Not the local bulk PCs mind you, I'm talking about the big Corellian PCs now. She's fast enough for you old man...

Super Mayor!? - 2/23/10

Super Mayor!? - 2/23/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 54 of Project 365. I'll admit it. I'm a foursquare whore. I'll often go to new places just to get the points or swing by old places to maintain my mayor status. Is that so wrong? I was going to add my work to foursquare but a co-worker beat me to it. I don't know how I pulled it off, but I managed to check in more than she did and I've only checked in twice!

I'm pretty sure this means that I can't be that I'm the mayor.

An odd gift... - 2/22/10

An odd gift... - 2/22/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 53 of Project 365. Like everyone, I've had my share of odd people in my life. Years ago, I had a friend we'll call..."M". M and I used to work together until he or she was let go. Now please pardon the vagueness of this story - I don't want to be hunted down like a dirty dog and if I put too many details out there...well you can guess the rest. Anyway, a few days prior to his or her last day, M, pulled me aside and said "I want you to have this. From one warrior to another." I stared down in disbelieve. M had put an over 1 foot long blade into my hands. It was like being in an episode of "The Office" before "The Office" even existed.

Sure, that might have made sense if we both had served together in the Marines. We worked together in an office building in Chicago and I don't believe M ever served in the military. I really tried to decline the gift, but M would…

Blur - 2/21/10

Blur - 2/21/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 52 of Project 365. I was looking out my bedroom window & I thought this might make a cool shot. No effects were used. It's just ambient lighting.

3 blind moose sighting! - 2/20/10

3 blind moose sighting! - 2/20/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 51 of Project 365. Most of the day Friday and all of Saturday I felt like utter crap. Friday night and 95% of Saturday were spent in bed but I did manage to run out and pick up groceries, late Saturday afternoon. After not seeing 3 blind moose at all after originally stumbling upon it a few years ago, I finally spotted a few bottles at the grocery store. Too bad I no longer drink.

Soon after getting home and putting away my groceries I passed out. That's why this is being posted today ;)

Pirate! - 2/19/10

Pirate! - 2/19/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 50 of Project 365. People online are always asking me "Tom, do you really have an eye patch, like you do on your Facebook profile?" Well, shiver me timbers...of course I do. What kind of question is that?

Put a cork in it! - 2/18/10

Put a cork in it! - 2/18/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 49 of Project 365. See? I told you the cork was cool :)

3 Blind Moose - 2/17/10

3 Blind Moose - 2/17/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 48 of Project 365. Back in the day when I used to drink, I loved finding wines that came in odd bottles or wines with odd names. One day I was out and about and I stumbled upon 3 blind moose. Yup, right there down the wine aisle. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was coming home with me. Because I'm classy, I like my wine the same way I love my women - ice cold. So after a day or two in the refrigerator, it was ready.

The wine was finished about 2 days after opening the bottle, but I just can't build up the nerve to throw the bottle out. I know I tend to be a sentimental fool, but this is a bit strange even by my standards. What can I say, I think the bottle is awesome. In case you were wondering, the wine was very good too.*

So now the empty bottle of 3 blind moose has a place of honor in my kitchen. Oh, did I mention that even the cork was cool?

*I am not a wine expert or snob. The wine was probably "ok" by an …

Push-ups - 2/16/10

Push-ups - 2/16/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 47 of Project 365. I do push-ups. A lot of push-ups. Good thing I found these cheap push-up stands a few years ago. They do a splendid job and really take the pressure off of the wrists. I love to use them in my kitchen since the lines in the tile floor help make sure that my hands are evenly spaced out.

I do 3 or 4 sets, just about every night.

Time - 2/15/10

Time - 2/15/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 46 of Project 365. Time drains away like the sand in a hour glass. This hour glass originally belonged to my grandmother. After she passed away, it went to my mom. After my mom passed away, it came to me. It's one of those objects from your childhood that, perhaps, shouldn't mean much but does anyway.

I know I've always be worried about running out of time and I mean in the big sense - Life. So tonight, I sit here and I think about where I've been and where I'm going. The time I've wasted and the time I've treasured. And one thing never changes...time waits for no one and when your time is up. It's up.

If the shirt fits... - 2/14/10

If the shirt fits... - 2/14/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 45 of Project 365. Irony abounds. Though the one person who would probably get everything this picture is saying, will probably never see it. Now, that might have something to do with the fact that we no longer talk...

It's just as well, really.

I first saw this marvelous t-shirt a few years ago at and from the first moment I saw it, I knew I'd have to order it. I can't remember, but I believe it's a limited edition. Regardless, it stays lovingly sealed in a plastic bag, only to be brought out on February 14th.

Legend has it that every person that owns one of these t-shirts will be doomed to a terrible love life for the rest of their days. So far, it's not looking too good.

Megan - 2/13/10

Megan - 2/13/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 44 of Project 365. Saturday night, Megan & Beggars Pizza. Sounds like a pretty good night to me :)

Meg's haircut - 2/12/10

Meg's haircut - 2/12/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 43 of Project 365. I've got Megan this weekend and Meg needed a hair cut...

Oh the excitement!

Dawn - 2/11/10

Dawn - 2/11/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 42 of Project 365. My bedroom faces East and every once in a while I'm treated to a cool sunrise. At least I think it's cool & this is my blog, so that's pretty much all that counts :p

Arctic Rabbit - 2/10/10

Arctic Rabbit - 2/10/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 41 of Project 365. You know you are in for a rough day when you get out of bed, look out the window and see your car being swallowed up by snow. It's hard to tell just how much snow we got due to all of the drifting. But rest assured, it was enough to make for a bad morning.

In case any of my warm weather friends were thinking "Gee, it would be great if we had snow here..." just stop. Keep those thoughts to yourself because if anyone heard you talking like that, you'd really just sound foolish.

Snow - 2/09/10

Snow - 2/09/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 40 of Project 365. Snow is a fact of life in Chicago. But that doesn't mean we have to like it. Especially when the snow hits us "Shawshank Redemption" style.

I grabbed this picture on my way to the train tonight. So far, downtown at least, the snow plows and building engineers were keeping up with the snow fall. Not so much in the south suburbs. Tomorrow should be an interesting commute if the snow doesn't stop before morning.

Winter, I want a divorce. Seriously.

Garrett Popcorn - 2/08/10

Garrett Popcorn - 2/08/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 39 of Project 365. Today was a hectic day. Uncertain work stuff coupled with the fact that we (in the Chicago area at least) are supposedly getting hammered with a snow fall of biblical proportions on Tuesday made a Garrett Popcorn run a top priority. I've been craving some Garrett Popcorn goodness, so I snuck out during my lunch hour and hit up their store on State & Madison. Mission accomplished! Soon after, the sun came out and all was right in my world.

Super Bowl / Birthday Party -2/07/10

Super Bowl / Birthday Party -2/07/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 38 of Project 365. My uncle Rich and my cousin Joel each have birthday's that fall around the time of the Super Bowl. So we normally just celebrate all three at the same time. The entire family rooted for the Saints so naturally I had to say I was rooting for the Colts. Of course I did so wearing my Raiders jersey.

Good times.

Raiders - 2/06/10

Raiders - 2/06/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 37 of Project 365. Superbowl Sunday is tomorrow (shhhh, I'm pretending it's still Saturday night!) and like I do every year the Raiders are not in it, I wear Raiders gear anyway. My way of thumbing my nose at the rest of the sporting world.

So my jersey is all laid out and ready to rock. Go Raiders!

Hot air popcorn - 2/05/10

Hot air popcorn - 2/05/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 36 of Project 365. Lately my Twitter stream has been overtaken by tweets and re-tweets about Garrett Popcorn. If you've ever had Garrett Popcorn, you'd know this is a good thing - Garrett Popcorn is simply delicious!

I tried as hard as I could to make it into one of their fine stores this week but the forces of the universe conspired against me. No Garrett Popcorn for Tom and after reading all the tweets about super awesome popcorn, I was feeling a bit dejected. Dejected with a hunger for super awesome popcorn.

Next week, I won't be denied...but next week is next week and I wanted delicious popcorn tonight. What to do? Well, I'll tell you. I fired up my West Bend Buttery II hot air popcorn popper and I got busy! Back in 1986 I got this marvelous machine for a Christmas gift and it still works. Maybe it's Swiss made? I don't know. But I do know that four minutes later, my hot popcorn was done. Sure, …

Lonely Moon - 2/04/10

Lonely Moon - 2/04/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 35 of Project 365. I'm a bachelor & I'm a night owl. I'm also gainfully employed, which makes the entire "night owl" part a bit difficult. One thing I do to help get myself out of bed in the morning is I open my blinds the night before. My bedroom faces east and the natural light of dawn really illuminates the room.

So this morning around 12:45, I opened my blinds and looked up into the sky to see a quarter moon obscured by clouds and fog. No stars, just the moon hanging out all by himself. It looked much cooler in person than it does in the picture :(

Post run - 2/03/10

Post run - 2/03/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 34 of Project 365. I needed a picture for today and at lunch time I downloaded a cool iPhone picture app called "Gorillacam", so I figured a post run picture would be a good way to test it out.

Gorillacam is actually a pretty cool app. It lets you add a grid to the screen for lining up shots, it's got a build in bubble level, time lapse settings, and a cool press anywhere setting to make taking pictures easier. I just wish it made everyone look like gorillas.

Vote! - 2/02/10

Vote! - 2/02/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 33 of Project 365. In Cook County (or Crook County as we like to call it) when you vote you are given a sticker to put on your shirt. Sorta like a badge of honor. I wear mine like a Super Hero emblem, but that's just me.

Nothing like a .25 cent sticker to prove that you exercised your right to vote. I tried taking this picture from farther away to show the sticker in context. However my iPhone camera didn't like the idea and I didn't really feel like putting pants on anyway.

So you've been either spared or cheated depending on your point of view.

Leg! - 2/01/10

Leg! - 2/01/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 32 of Project 365. I had a good run tonight and I tried a couple of self pics. Be thankful you're seeing my leg...the ones I took of my face would make you run screaming into the night. Let's just say I'm not very photogenic after a run.

I liked this picture because it was the best of the bunch, I'm tired and quite frankly sorta lazy after a run.
