Jim Gaffigan - 1/31/10

Image
Jim Gaffigan - 1/31/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 31 of Project 365. I've officially proclaimed this weekend to be "Jim Gaffigan" weekend at my place. Since this is the last day of the weekend, this will be the last Jim Gaffigan related picture. At least for a while. I can't promise that there will be no hot pocket shots (that's what she said!) or bacon related pictures either.

The show was fabulous! Me and my friend Michelle had a great time and nobody was arrested. Complete win.

Chicago Theater Part 2 - 1/30/10

Image
Chicago Theater Part 2 - 1/30/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 30 of Project 365. Looks like I'll be double posting today since I ran out of time yesterday ;) This picture is a close-up of one of the walls of the Chicago Theater. Pretty much every wall is as intricately done as this. Friday's photo of the ceiling also featured the same type of detail. I really wish I had better picture taking skills and a better camera!

Chicago Theater - 1/29/10

Image
Chicago Theater - 1/29/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 29 of Project 365. Tonight I had the good fortune to see Jim Gaffigan at the Chicago Theater with my friend, Michelle. For those that have never been there, the Chicago Theater is beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that I wish I had a good camera with me. This picture of the ceiling is from the lobby and yes...the entire place is chock full of intricate photo-worthy subject matter.

Train - 1/27/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 27 of Project 365. Just a quick snap shot as my evening train out of the city pulled into the LaSalle Street station. All aboard!!

I liked the way the locomotive's headlights seemed to dwarf the actual train.

Henry J. Waternoose, III - 1/26/10

Image
Henry J. Waternoose, III - 1/26/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 26 of Project 365. Meet Henry J. Waternoose, III. My daughter Megan got this in a McDonald's Happy Meal back in 2001-2002 and she hated it. She hated it so much, she never played with it. When me & the ex-wife separated, Henry (Crabby as Meg called him) was sent to my place to live with me. Picture that - the misfit husband living with the misfit toys. If I only had a Charlie in the Box!

Well, being the award winning father that I am, I would hide Crabby in Megan's room. Of course she would find him and get upset. Eventually her getting upset morphed into a game and we would take turns hiding Crabby. More than a few evenings, I would jump into bed only to discover Crabby stuffed under my pillow. Many a time I would get a phone call from the ex-wife hours after she picked up Megan "thanking" me for hiding Crabby in Megan's suitcase.

This photo shows Crabby perched on Megan's pillow, pati…

PC Setup - 1/24/10

Image
PC Setup - 1/24/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 24 of Project 365. One of my duties as a Super Hero is keeping new PCs safe from harm. A friend brought me this 2 day old Gateway and about 3 hours later it was ready. Trial software? Gone. Windows updates? Downloaded & installed. Awesome open source software? Ready to go.

All this and on a Sunday too. You should see me in a cape...

White Castle - 1/23/10

Image
White Castle - 1/23/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin.
Day 23 of Project 365. In the south suburbs of Chicago there is one place to go when you are drunk, hungry, it's between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am & you decide you really hate your stomach. That place has a name and it's not Hell. It's not Taco Bell. It's White Castle.

They're called "sliders" for a reason - the slide down your throat at 2 am and right back out of your ass at 10 am. Good times. I hope you people can appreciate what I've put my body through tonight to get this picture. Especially considering I was sober. Now where did I put those Tums?

El Chorizo - 1/22/10

Image
El Chorizo - 1/22/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 22 of Project 365. El Chorizo. It's a long story, but like most of my stories...it will surely waste your time. What's that you say? Tell it anyway?

Fine.

One day on the train, I brought up the story about the Milwaukee Brewers latest racing sausage - El Chorizo. You see, the Brewers didn't realize they needed to get Major League Baseball's approval to add a new meat product to their stable of fine racing sausages. MLB told the Brewers that they needed to shelve El Chorizo for the rest of the year until he could be approved. The Brewers made light of the situation by explaining away El Chorizo's departure as a baseball move - they sent him down to the minor leagues for "more seasoning".

My buddy Russ said "Tom, I thought YOU were El Chorizo." From there...well...the rest is simply a part of legend. We joked about it for the rest of the ride downtown. That next summer my mom and her boyfriend…

The Oaks - 1/21/10

Image
The Oaks - 1/21/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 21 of Project 365. The Oaks is a Mokena Park District complex that has an indoor track. If you ever hear me say I'm going to the track, this is the one. Sure, it's not big but that doesn't matter when the weather gets bad.

Beef. It's what's for, er, lunch? - 1/20/10

Beef. It's what's for, er, lunch? - 1/20/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin.
Day 20 of Project 365. The team was taken to lunch today by the dual boss-ladies. Very nice. Especially since they took us to a super swanky place called "Tavern at the Park". Maybe it's an inside joke of the owners, because I've never seen a tavern like this before. The word "tavern", for me at least, conjures up all sorts of images of places on 63rd Street in Chicago. Dark places. Places with pickled eggs in 1 gallon glass jars at the end of the bar and Old Style on tap. Places with guys named "One-eyed Ernie", "Knuckles" and a bar keep named Jean.

This "tavern" was brightly lit and filled with people in business suits. People doing business the Chicago way - over food. Sadly, not a "Knuckles" in sight.

So, I ordered the Prime Rib sandwich and it was fabulous as you might be able to tell from the picture. Sure, it was a bit too fatt…

Tools of the Trade - 1/19/10

Image
Tools of the Trade - 1/19/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin.
Day 19 of Project 365. Tools. Every job, every craftsman, uses tools. The carpenter has his hammer, his tool belt, his tape measure. The plumber has his Teflon tape, his pipe wrenches, his pants that never cover the crack of his ass. I, the low level manager at an internet marketing company, have my mouse, my iced coffee and my iPhone.

Tools. Every craftsman has them. And these are mine.

Cubicle Art? Roosters?? - 1/18/10

Image
Cubicle Art? Roosters?? - 1/18/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 18 of Project 365. My good friend & former co-worker, Yvette, used to have a rooster calendar hanging up in her cubicle. When Yvette left the company, she handed out select rooster photos from the calendar to her co-workers. I ended up snagging two. She originally gave me the one with the red background. I believe the other was picked up when someone else left the company.

Anyway, I keep them on display in my workspace as a reminder of the Taco Fresco runs & Doculate excursions from years past. Plus when VIPs come through the office, the pictures always garner odd stares. Which is exactly what Yvette would have wanted. As Yvette used to say "Dignity and Honor!".

Work out - 1/17/10

Image
Work out - 1/17/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 17 of Project 365. I work out a lot. One thing that makes it easy to not skip a workout is having a pull-up bar right next to the bed ;) I canceled my gym membership a few years ago and I don't miss it at all. Push ups, crunches, pull-ups and running - I've got everything I need at home. Add in the desire to do it and I've got my recipe for staying fit.

Meg & Beggars Pizza - 1/16/10

Image
Meg & Beggars Pizza - 1/16/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 16 of Project 365. Megan was pretty excited about being in today's picture. Being her Dad though, It is my duty to give her a hard time. I told her she had to share the limelight with the pizza. She didn't seem to mind :)

Payday Penguin - 1/15/10

Image
Payday Penguin - 1/15/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 15 of Project 365. A few years ago around the holidays, my co-worker William found this holiday blow-up penguin at the local Walgreens. He bought it for the office, of course, because really? What office doesn't NEED a 4 foot tall inflatable penguin that's decked out in fancy winter attire?

Well the holidays came and the holidays went. Being part of Corporate America, it just seemed like the thing to do would be to give the penguin his waddling papers. You know, thank him for a job well done and send him packing...but this story...this story has a happy ending:

It was a Friday in January and that Friday was no ordinary Friday. That Friday was payday. William was taking down his holiday decorations and like a lover saying goodbye to his soul mate at the airport, William was stalling. I could tell he was attached to his inflatable friend. With the compassion of someone that is truly disinterested I said "Hey, Willi…

Farewell, Mary! - 1/14/10

Image
Farewell, Mary! - 1/14/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 14 of Project 365. My soon to be former co-worker Mary and I have this long standing tradition of getting photographed together at just about every work function we attend. Well this tradition has come to end because Mary has found another job with people she likes more than us. Just kidding. Maybe.

Mary's last day is tomorrow. Farewell Mary! You will be missed :)

Rooftop Sunlight - 1/13/10

Image
Rooftop Sunlight - 1/13/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin.
Day 13 of Project 365. I've been waiting for a clear, sunny day to take this picture. This corner is one of my favorites because it gives us a clear view of Lake Michigan (though that's not the focus of this particular shot). Plus I've always admired the architecture of the building under the flag. I have no idea what the name of that building is and unfortunately, I'm entirely too lazy to do, you know, research. **Edited** My former co-worker, and still friend, Margaret, was nice enough to point me to this wiki article about the unidentified building. Thanks Margaret!

I think the main draw of this picture for me, is the way it shows the old buildings with the new buildings. Plus I liked the way the sun reflected off the two buildings.

No effects were used, mainly because I don't know how.

Click on the picture to go to my Flickr page where it can be viewed in it's entirety.

Post run - 1/12/10

Image
Post run - 1/12/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 12 or Project 365. My sinuses are good, my leg no longer hurts & I've been dying to get back to running. This was taken with my iPhone about 5 minutes after my run. There is a very cool indoor track about 20 minutes from my place and while it's only 1/12th of a mile long it sure beats running outdoors in nasty weather.

A few of the extra cool things about this place:

1) It's FREE.

2) It's not crowded by the time I get there.

3) It's FREE.

And to answer a few questions:

1) Yes, my nose has been broken on numerous occasions. Last count was about 5 times.

2) No, I don't have a black eye - it's just poor lighting.

3) Yes, I do realize my eyes are not even. I call my left eye, my "crazy" eye. I wouldn't mess with it if I was you.

Time to eat dinner. I hear a bowl of chili calling my name...

Office runner - 1/11/10

Image
Office runner - 1/11/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 11 of Project 365. I'm a runner. It's what I do and it's a very big part of who I am. In the summer and whenever the weather is hot, I'll often run after work when I get home. I've always been a fan of running later in the day and It's probably when I do my best running.

However, when the weather gets colder, I'll run during the day on my lunch break. As you can see from the picture, I keep a pair of running shoes and backpack full of running clothes under my desk at all times. You never know when a good running opportunity will present itself! It's best to be prepared, right?

Chili's ready! - 1/10/10

Image
Chili's ready! - 1/10/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 10 of Project 365. People that know me, know I make chili. A lot of chili. It's one of my healthy staples. I've found that it's an excellent food for those that work out. It has a pretty close to perfect balance of carbs, fat, protein and fiber. Plus the way that I make it, it's low sodium as well. I make mine with cayenne pepper and studies have shown that pepper can help boost your metabolism. I tend to make it with different veggies and different types of meat every week so it's never quite the same.

A few of my ingredients from week to week: blackeyed peas, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, tomato sauce, onion, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, lean ground turkey or lean ground pork, pinto beans and or white beans and a secret ingredient.

On this cold, 10 degree Sunday...Chili...I salute you!

Tim Brown - 1/09/10

Image
Tim Brown - 1/09/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 9 of Project 365. When you are a die-hard fan of a football team that's not in the playoffs, it can be hard to watch other teams take to the field in pursuit of that Super Bowl Trophy.

I am an Oakland Raiders fan. I bleed silver & black. I always have and I always will. I have Raiders jerseys, pajama pants, blankets...hell, I even have a Raiders tattoo. So you can probably imagine the joy I experienced a few years ago, when I went into a store that carried the Todd McFarlane sports figures and I saw the one for Tim Brown. Needless to say, I didn't leave the store without him.

Ever since, it has a place of honor on my bookshelf, forever watching the Raiders on TV just over my shoulder. Tim Brown is a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year and I'm hoping he makes it in.

I think it's time to put in my Raiders history DVD and reminisce about the old times...

Sinus Buster?! - 1/8/10

Image
Sinus Buster?! - 1/8/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 8 of Project 365. I was not planning on posting a product shot today. In fact, I was planning on a picture from the going away party I attended tonight. However...I was having a little bit too much fun to remember to take any pictures at the party. DOH! Forgive me? Next week another co-worker is leaving the company and she wants to be in a picture. I doubt I'll forget when I have someone reminding me from 3 feet away ;)

Anyway, I was in Walgreens yesterday looking for some relief from my 4 day long sinus headache when I stumbled upon "Sinus Buster"! Everything about the packaging was screaming "Waste of Money", but I was desperate. I mean REALLY desperate. I mean I would have shoved fire ants up my nose if someone told me that worked. So after spending 15 minutes looking at the usual subjects (and knowing they don't help me) I finally reached for "Sinus Buster". Best. Move. Ever.

Sure, it …

Balcony snow - 1/7/10

Image
Balcony snow - 1/7/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 7 of Project 365. When I woke up this morning and saw all of the snow I had a feeling today's picture would be snow themed. Honestly, how could it not be? I had other ideas but yeah...they had zero chance of being picked for today.

This is from my balcony. I always love the way the street light plays with leaves in the summer and the branches in the winter. In the summer my balcony is surrounded by leaves. That makes it a very nice place to sit and read or think.

This was taken with no flash - just ambient lighting. I was freezing while taking this picture - hope you enjoy it!

Cubicle Art - 1/6/10

Image
Cubicle Art - 1/6/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. An actual picture that's hanging up in my cubicle at work. A few years ago, we were rolling out a new product line and it was really not working all that well. Out of frustration one of the tech guys drew this sweet little gem of a picture.

Contest Winner! - 1/5/10

Image
Contest Winner! - 1/5/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 5 of Project 365. I decided to have a little contest revolving around yesterday's picture. As luck would have it, I didn't even have time to announce it on Facebook or Twitter before my co-worker Sylvia had the correct answer!

Lesson learned - announce the contest first, then post about it! The devil is in the details as they say. She checked out the blog in the morning and before I knew it, the contest was over. She walked away with the $10.00 Starbucks gift card and I walked away with my picture for today.

I'll have to come up with a better contest idea next time!

Cold winter morning - 1/4/10

Cold winter morning - 1/4/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin.
Day 4 of Project 365. It's 7:27 am and I'm on my way to work on a chilly January morning. How chilly? Try 9 degrees. Brrrrr!

In work out related news, I've been rocking a sinus headache since last night. It's a pretty nasty headache - it kept me up for a very large portion of the evening and needless to say I did not sleep much.

In lieu of a run tonight, I decided to stick around mi casa and work out instead. Pull ups, push ups, crunches...the usual home workout. I'm just going to take it day to day at this point. No sense in trying to get back to running quicker than I should. Hopefully tomorrow, but more than likely, Wednesday. One good thing, my leg feels great. No pain at all when I walk to & from work to the train station.

One last thing. About today's picture: The first person to leave a comment with the correct make, model and year of my car will win a $10.00 Starbucks Gift Card. No lie. C…

Tom and bass - 1/3/10, originally uploaded by TomRubin. Day 3 of Project 365. Sunday night is a good night for the blues. That sweet little number in my hands is my Fender Geddy Lee Jazz bass. I've done most of my recording with her and she's like a good friend. I don't play that much any more, but she's there whenever I need her.

Project 365 & other stuff...

Happy New Year everyone!

After seeing a bunch of people starting up new Project 365 photo blogs, I figured I would give it a go. I plan to throw in a mixture of pictures from my day including stuff related to my running and working out as well as the occasional self portrait. I hope to make it fun. It will be interesting to see how much I will have changed over the next year. If you have not heard of Project 365 before, you can see a great example by my friend Christa at TheChrista.com.

On the running front, I plan on hitting the indoor track on Monday after work. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I'm really hoping that the pain in my left leg is completely gone. I think I've stayed off it long enough for it to have healed. I suppose we will find out on Monday!

Next weekend I plan on driving out to Naperville to check out the Vibram Five Fingers and I'm thinking the SPRINTS model would be the one for me. I've heard that because they are made in Europe the sizes will be…
